Peer-to-peer networking is one of the fastest-growing fields in IT. It has been responsible for some major innovations in the way we communicate, file share, and do business online. P2P networking allows people with similar interests to connect directly without any intermediaries like banks or other financial institutions.

The most popular application that utilizes this type of connection is the BitTorrent protocol, which enables users to download content from each other rather than downloading from a centralized server. People have been using peer-to-peer technology since the late 1990s for music sharing and it has grown into a large phenomenon that touches many aspects of daily life.

How do P2P works?

Peer-to-peer (P2P) computing or networking is a distributed application architecture that partitions tasks or workloads between peers. Peers are equally privileged, equipotent participants in the application. They are said to form a peer-to-peer network of nodes. The internet service providers may use multiple peers within a virtual network on computer systems.

The basic principle behind peer-to-peer computing is reducing resource sharing over a computer network. Organizations, corporations, or across the Internet can potentially take advantage of peer-to-peer computing to share resources and communicate more effectively with each other.

The peer-to-peer model is very different from the client-server model where communication is dependent on a central hub – it does not have any hubs – every node can communicate with all other nodes directly, as well as through intermediaries.

This model of network arrangement differs from the client-server model, where communication is usually to and from a central server. The unstructured networks share direct connections for the computers connected to help clients join.

What is P2P Used For?

Distributed computing is a concept where multiple computers or devices can be used for a single task, resulting in a faster and more efficient process. The type of system set up for this is usually referred to as “peer-to-peer” (P2P) since all the individual units are equal participants in the exchange. In fact, many open-source systems have been developed with this kind of system in mind.

In most cases, these peer-to-peer networks are storage space based offering services like file sharing among the participants. When all computers work together to perform part of a larger task, it is referred to as distributed computing. Distributed computing has also become common for playing games. The user-created search engines offer processing power within a local network, structured networks, network bandwidth, physical network, and the whole network for internet users.

P2P is a file-sharing method used to send and receive data over the Internet. Just like BitTorrent, where computers running P2P software can share files with each other, p2p is also seen in many types of networking systems; it's not just limited to music and video files. This type of system usually involves all sorts of data types like text, music, videos, and even highly sensitive documents that are used in governmental or corporate applications.

The internet provides a medium for people to share files such as movies, music, and computer programs. Advances in Internet technology have made it possible to download data from many different users at once – this is known as peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing. The benefits of using P2P include:

The speed at which you download files from the internet is much faster when using P2P since it doesn't rely on a single source. In addition, there are dedicated servers that index various P2P files making it easier to find specific types of files.

Less Expensive

The advent of broadband technology has made it possible to use P2P to download files without affecting the download limit on your internet plan. This is because P2P takes advantage of “leechers” (peers who do not yet have the complete file) to add to the overall speed of downloading a single file.

More Efficient:

Unlike other methods where you download files from a single source which is often overloaded, P2P distributes the file you are downloading between various users in chunks. This means that your computer downloads data in parallel which is more efficient than downloading in single mode.

Freedom to Share:

P2P networks allow individuals to share files without approval from third parties (such as record labels and movie producers). File sharing is not restricted and individuals are free to share whatever files they like.


P2P users do not always know the origin of the file they download since it is possible for a single user to upload different files with separate IP addresses. This means that it may be possible to distribute illegal content over P2P networks such as movies and music which have been downloaded from a third party. In addition, P2P file-sharing programs often contain malware that will infect your computer.

Inappropriate Content:

Many people use P2P networks to download files from unknown sources or even share pornographic material amongst friends and family which can be inappropriate for children to see.
